On September 10, 2007, the US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command issued solicitation W56HZV-07-R-0776, asking for Ambulance Shelters to be integrated onto government furnished hard-top M1152 HMMWV Chassis. These shelters were destined for the new Afghan Army on an FMS basis. On March 17, 2008, Burtek was awarded contract W56HZV-08-D-0090, a three-year multi-year IDIQ contract to produce 920 Ambulance Shelter units in the first program year, with options for 1,080 in each of the following two program years. Nations allied with the United States have the ability to purchase additional units as an option to this TACOM contract because the contract, as executed, has been done so specifically to support FMS sales. (Click image to view PDF) With capacity for four litter patients, or six ambulatory patients, or two litter and three ambulatory patients, the Shelter provides ample room for the care and transport of battlefield casualties. The Shelter is equipped with provisions for three (3) M-size oxygen containers, more than enough for the transport of six patients. Four (4) Schrader compatible, swivel-style, oxygen flowmeters (with integral adaptors) and (4) bulkhead-mounted, Ohmeda (Ohio) compatible, oxygen flowmeters (with integral adaptors) are mounted on the front bulkhead providing easy access for the medic. The interior is illuminated by four (4) 22-Watt, 700-Lumen, LED, overhead recessed lights. LED’s are ideal for use in applications which are subject to high shock loads and frequent on-off cycling. LED’s produce more light per input watt than fluorescent tubes, reducing power consumption, which is a desirable trait in applications with a limited power supply, such as that found in motor vehicles. LED’s light up very quickly, typically in microseconds. Also, LED’s do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps. Also mounted in the ceiling are four (4) hooks for the elevated suspension of intravenous bottles and bags. A supplemental dual-battery system with 12-Volt DC KKK-A-1822F compliance is provided to ensure plenty of power is available for medical devices. To ensure medics have adequate access to the onboard power supply, three (3) 12-Volt DC outlet receptacles, two (2) 115-Volt AC/60-Hz outlet receptacles, and four (4) 230-Volt AC/50-Hz outlet receptacles are provided in the wheel-well boxes. To maintain a comfortable ambient environment inside the Shelter, one (1) 580-CFM heavy-duty air conditioning and heating system is provided. Ensuring that patients are efficiently and comfortably loaded to the Shelter during low-light conditions, two (2) 15-Watt, 270-Lumen, LED, rear mounted loading lights are provided. Easy access to the MES Ground Ambulance Kit is provided in the shelving areas found in the cab-overhead compartment through the roof/bulkhead cut-out. The M1152 HMMWV is MIL-STD-1366 compliant for transportability. The TACOM/Burtek Ambulance Shelter, when mounted to an M1152 HMMWV, is completely C-130 RO/RO capable by simply storing the removable emergency lights inside the vehicle.
